Three of Cups

Upright — the friends at the table, joy shared

Mercury moves through Cancer today, and the mind speaks in the old tongue of water — memory, kinship, the name said gently. Three glasses lift. Whatever you have carried alone loosens its grip when set on a shared table; a small telling, half-finished, finds its listener. This is the day's gift: gladness that multiplies by being divided. The cost is exposure. To toast is to be seen mid-laughter, unguarded, and some part of you would rather keep the wine sealed. Let it be poured anyway. Joy witnessed becomes record; joy hoarded evaporates. Say the thing warmly, and let the circle widen by one.

Reversed — the third glass too many, the circle closed to others

Mercury moves through Cancer today, and speech turns tidal — words drawn from the body's own water, spoken more to those already inside the circle than to the door. Notice the shape of your table. Someone stands at its edge, half-included, hearing the laughter but not its language. The gift is intimacy that needs no translation: the shorthand of old affection, a room where you are already understood. The cost is the narrowing — the mistaking of warmth for enough, the second toast that becomes a wall. You might loosen one chair. Or you might rest, briefly, inside the small and guarded warmth, knowing what it excludes.
