The Devil

Upright — the chain examined, appetite named honestly

Capricorn's discipline turns its lamp on the thing you have been feeding in the dark. Today the chain is not struck from you — it is handed to you, cold and countable, link by link, so you may see where it fastens and what it fastens to. Name the appetite in plain speech: not the shameful version, not the flattering one. The gift is accuracy, and accuracy loosens. The cost is that you cannot unsee the shape of your own hand around the shackle, nor pretend the goat climbed here by accident. Sea-goat mountains are steep on purpose. Look, then choose the next step knowingly.

Reversed — the chain worn as jewelry, bondage called comfort

Capricorn holds the long cold slope today, and Saturn's hand rests on something you have stopped calling a weight. Notice what you have polished — the habit, the hunger, the arrangement you defend so fluently that no one asks anymore. The reversed card offers this gift: comfort is real, and you are permitted it. The cost is that comfort learns to imitate freedom, and the imitation is very good. Sometime before dark, lift the thing you wear at your throat and feel whether the clasp opens from the inside. You need not remove it. Only know. The goat climbs better knowing what it carries.
