The Sun

Identity, vitality, the will to be someone in particular

The center the rest of the chart orbits. Your Sun is not your personality — it is the engine under it: what you are becoming when you are most yourself, and the work that gives you back more energy than it takes.

Overdone, it is ego weather — every room a mirror, every conversation an audition.

The story — Helios, who sees everything

The Greeks gave the Sun a charioteer: Helios, who drove the burning car out of the east every morning because someone had to, and from that height saw everything done on earth — the gods swore their oaths by him, since nothing could be hidden from the one light. When Phaethon, his mortal son, begged to drive the chariot for a day, Helios could not talk him out of it, and the boy fell burning from the sky. That is the Sun of a chart: the daily, unglamorous work of being the one who shines — and the danger of handing that work to anything other than your own hands.
