Libra

Cardinal air · ruled by Venus

The scale in motion. Libra is relation — fairness, beauty, the other person considered before the sentence ends. What carries it in your chart makes peace, makes matches, and makes rooms pleasant to be in.

The cost is the self mislaid: so many sides seen that yours goes unspoken.

The story — The scales, held up alone

Libra is the only sign in the zodiac that is not a living creature — it is an instrument: the scales Astraea carried, hung in the sky beside her. For centuries it was not even its own constellation; the stars were 'the claws' of the scorpion next door, until the claws were cut away and justice was legislated into heaven where a weapon used to be. That is Libra: the made thing among the animals — proof that fairness is not an instinct but a craft, something built, balanced, and held up on purpose, usually by the one person in the room doing it.

The five

  • Thich Nhat Hanh · 1926

Exiled by both sides of a war for refusing to pick one of them.

  • Eleanor Roosevelt · 1884

Drafted a declaration that had to be signed by enemies, and got it signed.

  • Oscar Wilde · 1854
