Number 9
the elder
The last of the single digits, and it behaves like something ending. A 9 carries a wide field of concern — it feels the general case, not only its own — and often turns out to be the one who closes things: the caretaker at the end of a season, the person who forgives before it is deserved. It has old eyes early.
A generosity broad enough that no one ever gets to know you up close.
At its best
- Compassion with genuine range
- The ability to let go of what others are still clutching
- Perspective that skips the small quarrel entirely
At its cost
- The personal sacrificed to the universal
- Endings arrived at rather too readily
- The rescuer who cannot be rescued
